Christos E. Athanasiou is a mechanician, physicist, educator, and inventor who envisions the massive production and wide-spread adoption of sustainable structures. He and his team work on designing sustainable structures using renewably sourced and recycled materials in order to decarbonize construction and future communities, contributing to Earth’s net-zero 2050 goals and the demands of sustainable space exploration.
His work has been featured in various media outlets, including Forbes and MIT News. He also served as a Guest Editor at the Journal of Mechanics of Materials on an issue on “Machine Learning for Mechanics & Materials.”
Born in Athens, Greece, his life experiences have taught him that education and technical innovation can be huge catalysts for driving positive social change. He holds a PhD in Photonics from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and a MSc in Applied Physics at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
